Manchanbele Ride

"JP, main bhi aapki bike saaf karunga" . "Aap iss brush se saaf karo main paani dalunga .. ok ?" 15-20 minutes later  "JP, Aapka bike bahut bhari hai.. haath dard de raha .. aaah"   My 3 yr old nephew, shourya and I ensured that the bike is free of dirt and rotates freely with no friction at gears or brakes and the next morning i was all set to hit the highway with my dear friend Shreeju. Wait a sec, did i say All Set ? Oops, u will come to know what i missed as u keep reading :)

So for the first time of all my rides, i woke up without shreeju's call and yup, reached the meeting point ahead of this punctual freak.  5 30 AM, Silkboard, we started accelarating the rear wheel with the max. horse power we could produce and were enjoying the ride to the core. minutes later a bird picked shreeju to lay its shit on and my friend, like a gentleman, signalled me for a break and cleansed himself off the shit.

We had little water and moved on for mysore highway. This was shreeju's 3rd ride to saavanadurga and my first one. I was supposed to join him for both the rides but i should tell u, i had my own valid reasons to scrap it off, which my friend wudnt agree with me. first time,  the previous night to the ride, was filled with cyclone in my mom's subconscious dream and she woke up all of a sudden to convince me not to join this ride. My emotional sis too agreed with mom n i was forced to ditch my friend which i didnt wanted to :) . Second time, going down the memory lane, if i recollect it right, i had a small mishap and due to acute  pain i avoided the ride. Anyways, moving ahead...

The pedalling continued and we were doing great ! we hit the Mysore highway which was full of trucks and dirt, which i didnt like much. having skipped my  meal the previous night, I wanted to have some gud south Indian breakfast before we spot the road to kangeri village. After two denials at adjoining restaurants, we finally had nice delicious idlis and chitrannam in a small hotel served in traditional banana leaves. The lover of south Indian food I am, took no time to gallop it and feel fresh for the ride again. :)

around 30 mins passed and i saw a huge huge banyan tree whose tentacles and roots were almost same. this is the big banyan tree which is very famous and neatly maintained by the Bank Of Maharastra. Shreeju and I continued when i spotted an off-road ride. I called for it and Shreeju joined me. We took rest for sometime enjoying the clear skies and cool breeze. Shreeju started to showcase his photgraphic skills and caught some nice ones too. I joined him later. We had some great time there and then started moving towards saavanadurga.

slowly, the lustry green trees were replaced with deep blue waters when we arrived at manchanbelle reservoir. Amazing landscape, beautiful hills and the rest were blue waters and skies. the number of rotations in the fly wheel increased rapidly and continued doing so until we reached the bay. Wow., Awesome were some of the words which i kept saying on and on! both of us really wanted to dive in and njoy swimming but couldnt dare to, since the water was too deep and we had no knowledge about the flow inside. We took numerous pics so that we can preserve our memories in it  as much as we can and started biking along the lake-side which was fun.

"Instead of taking the primitive route to saavanadurga, lets see if we can catch a short cut to the hill amidst the hills and lake" was my call. We had in mind, that we will trek the small hill as much as possible and will turn back if we find a dead end. I started using my mountain bike for the purpose its been designed. Tried using the shock absorbers and its solid tyres gave me the confidence of riding it on any terrain.   I loved this ride and reached the dead end ! woaaaaa, Wat a view.. we were standing tall on the highest point of this small hill and deep below is the lake flowing with pin drop silence. I kept moving on from one single large stone to another and again, "Lets see if we find a nice route to the lake" to which shreeju responsed positively after doing his calculations. We came down and to our bad luck there wasnt a way out.  we came back to our bikes and further to the highway to join the usual route to saavanadurga.

After binging on a big chikki and Dairymilk for extra energy, We continued. Seconds passed and i was flat in touch with the road along with my bike. shreeju looks back n  he comes to my rescue. PINCH FLAT TYRES of the great Merida for the first time ever in its history ;) !

remember i said in the beginning if i was all set for this ride ? Nope .. I didnt check the required tyre pressures in the tube. very low pressure in the tyre, when it slides along the corner of the roads, generates large  shear forces  which makes one sector of circular tyre come out of the rim and the result is PINCH FLAT ! this is how my genius IITian friend states the reason of the result. I remember not checking the tyre pressure during my mysore ride as well and this is the repition of the same mistake. negligence and carelessness always lead to bad results and i understood it hard way.

Merida doesnt need a puncture kit was proven wrong, when shreeju opened his kit and we startied fixing the puncture. 20 mins passed and we got it done. i started my ride and then suddenly all the air inside the tube vanished for another puncture. Now we need water to check the  exact spot of another flat.
An old lady nearby helped us providing water in a kettle which helped us to spot the puncture. She gave us nice sweet water to drink and we thanked her to continue with our ride.

15-20 mins passed after reaching another small village, all the air vanished again and there is another puncture now in the same tube.  there should be a very small hole which was not tracable and the mistake we did was, we didnt recheck after filling air in our previous fix.! this time a cycleshop guy helped us to fix it up and we ensured it was perfect fix !

Shreeju had to leave for his home town, hence we decided to call the trip off and started back towards Bengaluru finishing 99.7 kms overall. there was fun, adventure and lessons too in this ride!

Lets hope i become more cautious in my next rides !
